Ryan Sluggett is an emerging artist living and working in Vancouver, British Columbia. Born in Calgary, Alberta, Sluggett majored in painting at the Alberta College of Art and Design, completing his Bachelor of Fine Arts with Distinction in 2003. He is currently completing an MFA at the University of California at Los Angeles.
Sluggett's paintings and mixed media drawings reflect the contemporary world through various vantage points. Rich in art historical references, his quirky cubist-inspired sketchings and splashes of colour explore the relationship between self and audience, implicating and involving the viewer through the use of allegory and direct observation. Sluggett's work presents a tension between the moving image and the still image, a tension he further explores in his animated films that take the viewer on a journey through labyrinthine structures of dreams and viewpoints.
