Liz Magor is an artist living and working in Vancouver, BC. Born in Winnipeg in 1948, she studied art at the University of British Columbia between 1966-68 and at Parsons School of Design in New York City between 1968-70, before completing a diploma at the Vancouver School of Art in 1971. She is currently an Associate Professor of Visual Arts at the Emily Carr Institute in Vancouver.
Magor has developed an international reputation for her sculptural and photographic works that explore ideas of identity and authenticity. Her recent polymerized gypsum sculptures, which are based on objects from nature or everyday items, display an intricate casting technique and a rigorous attention to formal properties that capture the texture and tone of the subject. Investigating notions of survivalism and hiding or hoarding, Magor's sculptures reveal themselves as storage spaces or hiding places for basic needs and concealed habits.
